Misleading on Cutoff times for deposit and huge overdraft fines are the result

Business & Finance

I am not a fan of banks in general. I feel that they know they are a required part of society and that they make it a general practice to take advantage of this. With that in mind, I have a serious problem with the ethics of this particular branch located in Englewood, Colorado.

My situation was that I got online to check my account and noticed that I was overdrawn. Not wanting to incur anymore fee's, I went to the branch after I got off from work (weird that I work until 5) and deposited cash into the ATM so that the 2 pending payments would be covered. When I woke up this morning I noticed that I had in fact been charged with those fee's anyway. $140 in overdraft fee's for $25 in debit card charges. (Gotta love the math on that... Crazy that banks keep getting in trouble with this kind of thinking) Seems like a scam.

Here is why I am frustrated though. This is not the first time that i have had an issue with this. Previously I deposited a check on a friday that did not go through until the following tuesday. Oddly that led to some hefty fee's as well. When I asked about this I was told that it was in the fine print of my banks papers that they gave me and my responsibility to understand their cutoff times. I was then told that most days anything that is a check will not go through until the following business day, but if I deposit cash it is available immidiatly. Thinking that it was available immidiately I figured naturally that last night I would of been covered.

Here is the real kicker though... When I called to address it today, I heard numerous different idea's on what the cutoff times are from their 800 number and by individuals at the actual branch. Crazy that I could be confused by that.

Just a fair warning to anyone that lives in the Englewood area, Tracy Harrick and Brian Wells will do what they can to come across as accomidating, but they are very good at using specific words to keep you in the dark. Also seems like the bank will do what it can to make sure they get those fee's out of you.
