Credit card - build your credit

Business & Finance

I received a call from US Goldline telling me of their fabulous offer to get a credit card with a $2500 credit line which would build my credit report as they report twice monthly (i. E 24 times per year) unlike mastercard and visa.

The salesperson asked for my bank account details, routing number and social security number to check whether my account is open and active in order to qualify for a credit card. I did not get the full details about the credit card yet before she went about trying to get me to sign up for the card. She explained that it was an online card and that they offer special deals and discounts when the card was used for purchases. The interest rate of the card is 0%. Then she informed me that I would have to pay $250 to open the account which would be given back by me in 5 $50 vouchers which I could use to pay off my account during the first 5 months. So I agreed to sign up, it sounded like a good deal and I could do with a $2500 credit line. I followed the voice prompts to give my billing information and then they hung up the phone.

Fortunately, the voice recording of my address wasn't clear so they didn't take money from my account. They called me up to re-record so that they could go ahead and set up the card. Then I asked the vital questions.

In the meantime I had logged onto their website to check them out and found out that it's an online card only so it is not good to be used anywhere but on their website. Also, one needs to log in before you can see what items can be purchased on their site so before signing up for the card, someone has no idea what is on offer! So I confirmed with the salesperson that the card was only online and just for their site and I declined the offer. I'm glad that I was able to get out of this before I lost $250!
