Knew it had to be too Good to be True

Business & Finance

I received a letter in the mail stating that I have just been granted a $4,555.00 check to do as I wish, pay bills, etc. At the bottom of the check it stated to send 10 percent of the check and an additional one will be shipped out to me next day air. I was so excited to have this check come because I could use the extra money. I showed it to my husband and he questioned it, but being that I am a student and I have applied for a grant online before we thought little about if there would be a issue.

Once we reread the check we noticed at the top of the check it was being issued by a Gregory Ford from Washington Mutual and it also included the customer service number to the bank. First, we called the bank and asked them do they issue out grants, the reprensentative explained that they did, but they would not be able to tell who the issuer of the check was. I also have a home loan through Wamu, so we really did not think much of it that they check was coming from them.

The same day I went to were I bank and the check cashed with no problem. The teller informed me that the funds would be available the next day. Ok, cool, I told my self if there was a problem the one source that would know would be the bank. Once the check was cashed I had already set my mind on how to spend it. I paid some bills and went shopping, having the best time of my life in a long time the money couldn't have come at a better time. The bank called me five days after I had deposited the check only to tell me that the check had been returned and I was responsible to pay it back. The teller said if I had spent the money then I have to pay it back, of course I spent it, the check cashed. How can a check cash if it is bogus? Why is it the the only source that would know if a check is bogus, did not have something to detect it before it entered my account?

If there a steps to take in order to overcome this, someone please let me know. I should have known that my luck wasn't that great.
