They have attached my name to a debt that is not mine. The real debtor has a similar name

I got a strange recorded "tail-end" of a message that said something about an attempt to collect a debt. Knowing that I had no debt problems, I call the number to notify them that they called the wrong person. The first name was the same as mine but the last name was only similar. They thanked me and I thought that was the end of it.
When the calls started again, I called back to threaten them somehow if it did not stop. Now they have MY last name and current 2 year old address for a debt that is 15 years old from a company I have never heard of. I had them send me something in writing so I could investigate.
The account number attached to the debt is definitely not mine. I am not sure how to handle this. I am afraid if I continue it will just make things worse.
