Handling Short Term Disability Claims like collections

I had heard about dealings with Assurant before, but did not realize that Assurant and Fortis are the same thing. When my Dr took me out of work due to back problems, I learned very quickly that they handle claims in the same way regardless of the department. Never before have I encountered an insurance company that treats the people that pay them for a service like a debtor.

I was told by a manager (who at this time shall remain nameless, tick me off much more and I'll put my log up here with everyone's names) that she personally did not believe that I was disabled (apparently the cane did not clue her in) and that she was going to personally investigate my claim.

They have already been sitting on the claim for 11 days, what is another 7-10 business days forr them to request whatever paperwork they want, 7-10 business days for my doctor's office to get the paperwork back to them, then another 7-10 business days for it to be reviewed? 21-30 buisness days is late Feb to early March, my documented wait period was only supposed to be 8 days.

When I told her I would be seeking an attorney due to their maliciously holding the file, leaving my family with no income and possibly causing the loss of my home, she laughed then hung up on me.

Everyone knows how long it takes to get federal disibility, but at this point I think I will see funds from them before Assurant, Fortis, whomever they are gets my first check out. This is possibly the shadiest company I have ever come across and I cannot believe that no one has filed a class action suit against them yet. If I have my way, anyone who has ever been screwed by this company is welcome on the bandwagon.
