Trying to collect on a debt I don't have. Ripoff

I received a letter from this company on August 5th telling me that they were trying to collect on an account that is in default with NiCor. They claim the account balance is $2146.22 but that if I pay by August 31; I will only have to pay $643.87.

I notified NiCor customer service by e-mail inquiring about my defaulted account with them. They responded by telling me that they have not sold the account to a third party and that the total balance is only $948.13. The letter I recieved from this company (?) is very official looking except for one thing: they changed one digit in my NiCor account number.

If I hadn't checked this out carefully, I probably would have fallen for it and been out almost $650.00. That is a lot of money to someone trying live paycheck to paycheck. I hope other people who are contacted by this company take the time to verify their claims with the original creditor they purport to represent.
