Scam verizon phone bill

I got a letter today saying I owed Verizon $1228.39 for an account I never had. When I called they said they would reduce the bill by 50%, then to 25%. When I told them I would not pay it, they told me it would go on my credit report. While I was on the phone with them I did a search and found this site. I told her this was a scam and she tried to change the subject. Can they really damage my credit?
