Refused request to stop calling abouit someone else's debt, Threatened, very rude Oklahoma

My name was given by a nephew (without my permission) as a reference at Payday Money Store. I received a call asking me to have him call them. I agreed to do this the first call I received. Some days later I received a message on my answer machine and called them back as a courtesy. I informed them that I had given the message to the person, and there was nothing else I could do and requested that they not call me again. She refused and said I had been given as a reference. I told her that I did not give anyone permission to use my name and personal information as a reference and I had no control over anyone who did so. I said that I was not able to help them and that I was too old to be stressed out with this kind of phone call. The employee told me she would not take my name off the record. I must admit that, when she said that, It made me very angry and from that point on it became a yelling battle. I told her I want you to lose my phone number right now and do not call me again, I have no business connection with your company. She yelled back at me "I will call you everyday until you get him into this office."

I finally ended up hanging up on her but not before my birthday was ruined by the stress.

I followed up with a letter to persons in charge at the company and related what had happened. So far I have not received any more calls but I believe it was because the issue got resolved with the person who owed the debt soon after the call. I have no way of knowing if she would have followed up on her threats.

It really makes me mad the tactics that were used by this company to have the audacity to try to make me do their job for them, and to think that they had a right to harrass me on the phone just because someone gave my personal information to them without my permission.

Another thing that bugs me is that she said I was given as a "reference" by my nephew. I do not see anything wrong with a family member giving me as a reference which to me means I am able to verify that he is who he says, that I know him and can verify his address, job etc. Being given as a reference (The company's term) does not imply that they can expect you to help collect a debt if it is defaulted or that they have the right to refuse to removed your phone number when ask to do so..
