Asked for proof of the amount wouldn't give ripoff

My husband and I pulled up his credit report the other day and found these people on the report saying we owed $32,642.99. It was for a mobile home that was financed by Conseco and repossessed due to lack of income back in 2001.

Well these people come up saying we owe this amount and we told him that the amount was incorrect and we wanted proof that this amount was correct. He ignored my question and I told him that I would contact Conseco and find out the information and he told me that they would not deal with me and they would transfer me to him. I said well I want proof that we owe this amount and he said that we bought this account from Conseco and this is the amount that they had and I said that is not proof. I want proof in writing that this is what they say.

Well needless to say after that conversation he sent me a letter dated 1/13 and we talked on 1/19/06 saying as you are aware, we (company) purchased that above past due acct from Conseco blah blah blah and then it goes on to say unless you notify us within 30 days after receiving this notice that you dispute the validity of this debt. Well isn't that what I told him over the phone?

Well my real complaint is that this repossession happened in 2001 and these people are putting this on the credit report that it has happened since 12/05? We know we owe some amount but not that amount. He even told me that Conseco doesn't sell repossessed home because it is reselling and it's like having 2 loans on one. Well we bought this home and it was a repossession when we bought it so he lied there? What can I do about the dates, and not telling the truth?
