Mcg Collection, Not really illegal but, underhanded, attempted to collect a very old debt. They will prey on your ignorance!

I was contacted by MCG on a very old debt. First, dispute the debt, do not acknowledge the debt, once you dispute the debt, the only question they can ask is to confirm your address. Second, check your states "Statutes of limitations (SoL) for debt collection", third, do not give any personal information (ie Social security# etc...). You may have to give them your address to receive a copy of the debt. Fourth, do not agree to make any payments, they will want to "work with you", DECLINE!!!

This may be ackowledging the debt. And once you do, the you the statute of limitations may no longer in affect, and can actually start at the beginning. It is not illegal for mcg to call you in attempt to collect on a debt. Even though the statute of limitations has past. If in fact, the statute of limitatation has ended, return (by returned reciept requested) a copy of their invoice, denying your are responsible for this debt and the the SoL has ended, and you will use it as your defense should they decide to pursue legal actions. Again this may not stop the phone calls. Look up Fair-debt-collection on the internet, this website is very useful. Go there first before you respond to their phone call. Good luck! Rb
