Ripoff paid but company does not recognize as paid

My husband and I bought a house 2 years ago and found a bill to fingerhut on our credit. I had made a purchase and the merchandise was defective. I returned it. I never received credit and had refused to pay the bill. Until it depended on us getting a house. I paid and now we are buying another home and it is still on the report and they wont remove it saying it was never paid. What can I do? How do I get them to stop this and verify I paid this?
