Ripoff harrassment

I received a phone call from this company today asking if "person x" was there. When I said that this person was not a resident here, I was asked for my name. When I did not give that information, it was given to me by the caller. When I asked where the caller was able to get that information, he simply ignored this question and proceded to ask if this was the correct phone number for "address x". When I said no, the caller then stated my address. Again, I asked where the caller was getting this information and I explained that he had asked me for information about someone I didn't know and was now able to tell me my name and phone number without my having provided that. I asked to speak with a Manager and asked him the same question, where were they getting my information when they were calling about someone that I didn't know. After a few minutes, I was hung up on.

Being curious and concerned about identity theft, I then looked up the name of the company on the internet, and found this site. I called the number that showed up in my caller ID and when I asked to speak with a manger, I was asked for a case number. When I said that I didn't have one, I was asked who this was regarding. I gave the name of "person x". The representative at GC Services asked if I knew "person x" and I said no. She then asked me if I had received a phone call today. I said yes and told her that all I wanted to know what how they were able to get my information when they were calling about someone that I didn't know *at all*. She told me at this point that this was all a matter of public record and that they were able to get this information on the internet.

I asked why no one had said this in my first call. She told me that they had become "aggressive" because I had asked so many questions, and further explained that most people just hang up. So, in trying not to be completely rude, I was harrassed for having the audacity to want to know why someone called *me* to ask about someone that I didn't know and then they miraculously have *my* information.

I pushed a bit further and explained that if someone had told me this in my first conversation, I would not have been concerned. As it stands now, I'm wary of a company with practices like this. Lesson of the day, hang up on anyone who calls asking for someone you don't know.
