Complaint / review text:
Oh, the anthology one could produce about the myriad of filmmakers and creatives cheated and robbed by Mark Cartier! But in this limited space, I'll just provide the nutshell version.
I partnered creatively with Mark in the mid-2000's, first for him to direct my short "Good Cop, Bad Cop", and then a feature I'd written named "Fist in the Eye". All the money (ultimately upwards of $200K) for the production was provided by my personal connections, and long before we started shooting, and unbeknownst to me, Mark had stolen and spent almost all of it on himself.
Thus, when we finally DID start shooting on a three-week schedule, we ran out of money before we were even close to finishing it; almost no one on the entire cast or crew got paid a dime (some even loaned HIM money, never to be repaid, of course). Mark continued to assure me for the remainder of the year, that he would get more money and finish it, but that never happened.
He lied about the money, lied about a lucrative writing assignment he claimed to have gotten, lied about pretty much everything to me and to everyone else just to cover his tracks. Then I got a hold of the account statements that showed the thousands he'd spend on personal expenses, almost as soon as we'd gotten the money. Then he forged my name on a credit line with Wells Fargo and went delinquent on it by thousands more. Then he fled town, presumably never to return...
...but then he returned a few years ago and picked up right where he left off, first as a film maker, but then switching his focus more to distribution and production. He managed to get $1 million from an investor for a film he was contracted to produce about the plight of veterans, but he then, you guessed it, stole the money to spend on himself (he really, really, really likes visiting strip clubs) and other projects of his. How do I know this? Because the investor sued him and won a $1.3 million judgment against Mark, who didn't even bother to show up to court, and it's all in the court documents (see excerpts below). But he was far from done; I have since spoken with over a dozen other filmmakers who have been cheated and lied to by Mark. We all but unanimously agree that the man is a sociopath and compulsive liar.
I have been in Hollywood over 26 years, and have not met ANYONE approaching Mark's degree of amorality and dishonesty (and this is HOLLYWOOD! ). Do yourself a favor and stay far, far away from this man, this company, and anyone who works for him or vouches for him.
