Woburn — A North Andover defense lawyer was arrested Wednesday for snorting cocaine in front of the downtown police station, according to court documents. Mary Beckman of Reading, is charged with unlawful possession of cocaine and unlawful possession of heroin. Police found heroin in her possession in front of the downtown police station.
Officer David Jorge, who was assigned to the front desk, saw Beckman park in front of the station in a 2012 Toyota 4 Runner and then saw a front-seat passenger exit, while Beckman remained in the SUV, court documents say.
A short time later, Jorge saw Beckman rolling up a bill and snorting a substance, court records say. The officer approached and said, "what are you snorting? ” The attorney replied, "I’m sorry. It’s cocaine, the rest is in my wallet, ” according to court documents.
The arrest was made at 12:07 p. [continued below]....
.....m. Prosecutors said Beckman had appeared Wednesday morning in Woburn District Court. Beckman was found to be possession of one plastic bag of cocaine, weighing about 3 grams and 1 plastic bag of heroin, weighing about 0.3 grams, court records say.
However, Beckman's arraignment was continued until Nov. 1 in Woburn District Court by Judge Bernadette L. Sabra at the request of defense attorney Marcus Scott of Nashua, NH and over the objection of prosecutor Chris Abreu. Sabra also released Beckman on personal recognizance, pending the arraignment.
She wanted to continue the arraignment until defense attorney Kevin J. Reddington of Brockton could be present to represent Beckman. Once Beckman is arraigned, she must withdraw from all his pending cases, creating a hardship for Beckman and the court, he said.
He said the defense is hopeful of the same outcome as similar drug cases, which is dismissal upon payment of court costs. Scott told the court Beckman has accepted responsibility for his actions and realizes the stupidity of what she did. Abreu moved for the court to arraign Beckman as is done in all other cases, he said.
