I bought a horse from American Trail Horses advertised as a "trail horse suitable for a beginner". The first 2 weeks I owned the horse I worked with my trainer & the horse in an arena. My trainer knew that I wanted the horse primarily for trail riding, so on the third week she took it out on a trail to see how he would do. As soon as she started to head back to the barn, the horse reared and bolted.
For the next few weeks my trainer took the horse out on the trail, sometimes alone, sometimes with a few other horses, & both with & without a saddle and he always would rear up and bolt. Obviously he is not suitable for a beginner rider.
I went on a trail ride with my trainer (I was riding her personal horse) & I witnessed my own horse (ridden by my trainer) rear & bolt on our way home. She then had to actively hold him back, circle him, etc all the way back to the barn.
Since I have bought my horse, I have had to pay to ride other people's horses out on the trail.
