The Midtown Group
Used me to sell their business to my old employers

I kind of was skeptical about going in for an "interview." (Name witheld) called me out of the blue and said they saw my resume on CareerBuilder. He told me had a job that would be good for me but withheld all information about this possible employer. I decided I'd go to the "meeting" to see if this was a scam or not.

When I first got there, all of the employees were in the conference room on a phone call that was on speaker. I'm assuming they were talking to the headquarters located in D.C. I over heard them saying that they did not have a lot of jobs and that they had to find more places of employment. I heard Nick talk about how he just placed someone with the job that he had told me about the day before. Not once during the meeting did he mention that the job had been filled. He played it off as if it was still available. I had to bite my tongue during the whole time to not say anything.

I had to fill out a lot of paperwork including one about past employment. I wrote down some people that could be references and he questioned me about them. One of these people had offered me to come back to work for them in the future and I let him know about it. He insisted that he could call them and "persuade" them to hire me back right away as long as they used The Midtown Group as their source of employment. Basically, they'd take on me as their employer, I'd work for the company, the company pays The Midtown Group, and then they take out a portion of my check. I told him please do not call any of references to try to solicit his business, and if he must call any of them, it could only be about the reference. He looked at me funny and changed the subject.

As soon as I left the meeting, I knew I had to call my references to give them a heads up about this guy's agenda. I decided to wait until I got home (which would only be about 25 minutes) to call. I called them, one by one, and they all said that they just got a phone call from Nick from the Midtown Group. He called them all as soon as I left their "office." They all told me that he tried to get them to do their employment through The Midtown Group. I had to apologize to all of them.

He told me he'd get back to me that day with some "leads" and "forms" to fill out. I've never heard from him since.

All in all, it seems to me that The Midtown Group is only concerned with your past employers, so they can sell them their "product." With every "interview" they do, they get more sources of jobs for themselves. Pathetic.
