I am a single mother of 5 children ages 19,15, 13,10 and 8 yrs old. I was in a 2 bedroom apartment in Jacob Riis houses in Manhattan New York from July 1996 to December. I received section 8 in the beginning of 2008 because my family of 7 was overcrowded. We then moved to 3119 Beverley road Brooklyn, New York as of December into a 4 bedroom house. My 1 yr lease was up in October. But, i went back and forth to court to require more time until i can find an apartment. It was granted until June when my children get out of school.
During the court orders i received papers stating the Marshalls will put me out if i dont move by June. I dont understand the system so, they gave me the run around because June 24th my section 8 voucher expired. I then sent my kids to Georgia so i can get my section 8 back. Going back and forth to NYCHA i was rejected twice from section 8. I fought and fought during the summer while my children were away, hoping i will have a new apartment by the time they return home. I moved out of 3119 Beverley rd at the end of June and also put all my belongings into storage. September my kids returned and i had no apartment i stayed with my sister at 2097 Bergen street in her 3 bedroom apartment along with her 5 children. Which then was very overcrowded of 12 people in a 3 bedroom. As of September 16. I then went into a shelter. During my stay i have still been running back and forth to section 8 filling out applications for that and also housing.
November a Representative called me to close my section 8 case and i pleaded and explained how i gave all paperwork they have asked for and i was still rejected twice. She explained to me that i missed my section 8 briefing October 12th. I NEVER received any documents from section 8 letting me know of any appointments i had. She then gave me another briefing date as of December 8. When that date came i was their early sooooo excited to finally receive my voucher back. Well come to find out my voucher was withheld due to my husbands name still being on there as head of house which in the summer of running back and forth i provided letters, paystubs and mail of any kind proving that my husband and i arent together n that he has a different address. I also had to prove that my belongings were in storage. On December 9th I brought all documents down to NYCHA (section8) and they immediately gave me a voucher. I immediately looked for an apartment so we can get out of the shelter. Then we found a house.
The lady told me that my section 8 has been CLOSED. I cried for embarrassment, amazed, hurt, defeated, and total discouragement. What did i do wrong? They said i didn't recertify. Please someone tell me how did i know to recertify if i NEVER received any papers from section 8. All the times i ran down to section 8 and was being rejected how did i know to recertify? When i picked up my voucher in December they could have easily looked into the computer to find out that i needed to recertify but, no one informed me of anything. This isn't fair at all. Please help us receive a program please i have complied with everything.
