Beverly Hills, CA - Dr. Jay Calvert, who has a plastic surgery practice in Beverly Hills, is seeking more than $1 million in damages for libel and defamation against posters of online reviews, some of whom are anonymous.
The lawsuits have been filed in Los Angeles Superior Court: Case # BC453946 and Case # BC453888.
Dr. Calvert has also filed two lawsuits in Arizona Superior Court: Case #CV014893 and Case #CV014894.
Dr. Calverts lawsuits are already having a chilling effect on free speech. Many negative reviews for Dr. Calvert have been removed since the lawsuit was filed, including numerous allegations of fraud.
The high legal cost of defending defamation suits often forces defendants to settle and give up their rights to free speech to avoid the cost and stress of prolonged litigation, especially after they may have already been physically, financially and emotionally damaged.
