They said it was 'group insurance' like you'd get through an employer, and that a new group had just become available with a limited number of policies they could add to the group. I'd never heard of a group insurance that paid almost nothing. They said group insurance wasn't major medical, it was BETTER than major medical. She said it didn't have a maximum lifetime benefit like major med, nor the big deductible and copays like major med. They never once said it was "limited benefit insurance". I remember decades ago when major medical didn't cover office visits, it was a hospitalization policy. She IMPLIED this would take care of both. Well, it does pay a SMALL portion for both, but it's almost nothing. And there isn't an exact dollar figure at which coverage ends, it's just they pay so little on anything they pay for that it adds up to a small amount. If it sounds too good to be true...
Prescription drug coverage had to be purchased separately. I had to set up payments and pay an application fee before I could get the fine print, which DID say it was limited benefit insurance. It was certainly more expensive than any limited benefit policy I'd ever seen, and they didn't say it was limited benefit when we were on the telephone. It was almost as much as I'd been paying for COBRA, and more than the military retiree insurance, so I though it was possible for it to be decent insurance..
I was able to verify that the more important of my doctors were on the plan, now I'm disappointed with them that they'd associate with such a plan. But they do end up getting more money total with this insurance than with other PPO insurance, so I understand why they participate.
I feel so stupid.
